The Grapes of Roth

The Grapes of Roth is Roman Roth’s (winemaker of Wolffer Estate) idea of a Long Island Premier Cru wine range. It all started at the turn of the century when he wanted to create an ultra-premium wine but also a wine that had the power, concentration and age- ability that a top end Bordeaux has just from within Long Island. The first vintage was solely with Merlot and was in 2001 where it was heralded as the starting point of something historic for Long Island’s history as a region. From here he has added in Riesling, in 2007, and makes a Dry Riesling, a Virgin Berry Dry Riesling (his take on a Grosses Gewachs) and a Late Harvest Riesling. None of the wines are made every year, they are only made in the truly finest years.

The most recent vintage for the Merlot is the 2009 vintage and the Rieslings range from 2009-2012. Roman is already getting excited about the 2015 vintage. In fact he mentioned that the “2015 vintage in Long Island will be comparable to the 1945 vintage of Bordeaux in the many years to come” – a big statement.
