Mavrud
Classic aromas of Mavrud are Blackberry, Raspberry, Red Cherry, Black Plum
Mavrud gets its name from ‘mavro’ the Greek word for black – for the deep red complexion that fills the glass of its finished wines. It is without a doubt Bulgaria’s oldest grape varietal and certainly one of the finest.
As of 2009, there was 1,709ha of Mavrud planted across Bulgaria – though small it is one of the most popular indigenous grape varietals.
Singularly Mavrud produces full bodied, deep coloured and rather tannic wines. It has fresh flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant, wild raspberry and black plums. It also matches well with oak which adds vanilla and smoky flavours.
