COLOUR - RED
Red wines have a vast array of colours from light ruby to dark purple, almost black. The colour of red wine depends on the grape varietal/s that make up the wine itself. This is due to each grape having a unique amount and type of colouring agent (anthocyanins) in its skin. Some grapes will have naturally lighter pigments and thus give wines with lighter red colours on the spectrum, where alternatively you can have wines with thick skins and darker pigments that result in quite dark red wines.
The neat thing with red wine colours is that it almost always indicates the level of tannins in the wine. A lighter shade of red will be a lighter and softer wine, and deep red or purple will be a fuller bodied wine.
