Monica

Classic aromas of Monica are: Wild Strawberry, Raspberry and Red Plum

Monica is a red grape varietal from the island of Sardinia off the coast of central Italy. It is believed that Monica was originally a Spanish varietal that was brought over to Italy, and Sardinia in particular, during the reign of Aragon somewhere over the course of 1323-1720.

Monica is solely found on Sardinia and has yet to make it to the mainland. It is planted all across the island where it is used for both single varietal wines as well as in blends with other local grapes. Current plantings are at 2,909ha across the island.

Monica is oddly versatile and is made into dry, sweet, fortified and sparkling wines. The two leading sub-regions that highlight the best of Monica are: Monica di Sardegna and Monica di Caligari. It will give off ripe red fruit flavours of raspberry, cherry and strawberry as well as some black and purple fruit flavours in particularly ripe vintages.
