Montepulciano

Classic aromas of Montepulciano are: Boysenberry, Blackberry, Vanilla Bean and Coffee

Montepulciano is a red grape variety from Italy. It is famously named with the same name of the village in Tuscany – Montepulciano, where it may have historically made wines. Its current home is in the south of Italy in Puglia – particularly in Abruzzo.

The best examples of Montepulciano are from the sub-regions of Marche DOC, Rosso Conero DOC and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG.

It is predominately an Italian grape variety though there are minor plantings in California, Australia and NZ.

Montepulciano produces wines that are medium bodied and have smooth tannins. They have black fruit flavours with blackberry and boysenberry being key aromas. With oak maturation these wines will give coffee and vanilla bean flavours too.
